Making cannabis butter brings you a whole range of benefits beyond just enjoyment. If you’ve ever looked into cannabis recipes, you’ve probably noticed that most require cannabis butter as a base ingredient. Many people feel overwhelmed by this or don’t realize how simple making cannabis butter can actually be. We want to emphasize that depending on your dosage and heat control, you have complete control over the potency of your final product.
Once you have your cannabis butter ready, you can easily bake cannabis muffins or cookies, or simply spread the butter on your morning toast. The great thing about cannabis butter is that it opens up endless possibilities for successful and delicious cannabis cooking and baking. The following recipe is just one example of how you can make cannabis butter.
Preparation for Making Cannabis Butter
Anyone wanting to make cannabis butter needs to work with very hot water and fats. This can naturally lead to serious injuries or burns. Splashing fat on bare skin is dangerous. Therefore, when making cannabis butter, you should only work while wearing long-sleeved clothing and perhaps gloves. We naturally take no responsibility for any injuries, but we assume you haven’t smoked the ingredients for the cannabis butter beforehand and can handle hot materials with full awareness.
You might want to use the trim and leftovers from your harvest, as it’s somewhat wasteful to make cannabis butter from harvested buds. The trim will still ensure that your cannabis butter produces the desired effects. However, prefer the leaves, as these have a higher cannabinoid content. Stems and stalks have less, but can and should still be used. We don’t want to waste anything. Plus, you can make more butter because you have more plant material.
How long you’ll need for making cannabis butter can’t be stated exactly, but plan for about half an hour of prep time. The cooking time for the butter can range from three hours up to a full day.
Required Ingredients & Equipment:
- Marijuana
- Butter
- Wooden spoon
- Two strainers
- Plastic container
- Water
- Cooking pots
- Stove
- Blender
How Cannabis Butter Making Works in Practice:
First, you need to prepare the cannabis and grind it as finely as you can manage. Some people use a mortar and pestle, others prefer an immersion blender. We also think the immersion blender is a good alternative, since you can create a very fine paste within just a few minutes. The finer the cannabis, the better the reaction works during the infusion with the butter. When making cannabis butter, you’re essentially merging two oils together – those from the butter and those from the cannabis. The finer both components are, the better and more intense the fusion can be. Consequently, the quality of your cannabis butter after preparation will be better too.
Cannabis Butter – Cooking Tips
Now choose a cooking pot and fill it one-third full with the marijuana. Depending on the amount of cannabis you have, you should choose the size of your pot accordingly. A small amount means a small pot when making cannabis butter. This is really important, as will become clear to you later.
Now add the butter (please cut into pieces beforehand) in a ratio of one to four into the pot with the cannabis. For every 250 grams of butter, you should add one liter of water. This fills the pot to two-thirds capacity. Pay attention to the most accurate distribution and dosing possible.
Please stick relatively closely to the amounts we’re giving you, otherwise it can lead to overflowing or severe splattering of fats later, you’ll lose yourself in butter chaos and might even burn yourself in the end. This should be prevented. So remember: 1/3 and 2/3. Then nothing should really go wrong when making cannabis butter.
Heating Butter with Cannabis
Now it gets hot, because you can now heat the butter with the marijuana. Either you bring the water to a rapid, vigorous boil or you heat it to 100 degrees and let it simmer slowly. Option 1 is faster, but you might lose valuable THC and CBD. The reason for this is the evaporation and vaporization of THC and CBD particles. We recommend the slower, more relaxed cooking method when making cannabis butter, because then you’ll lose less cannabis and active ingredients, so the loss is minimal. But experiment for yourself, because cannabis butter experts still argue about this theory today. Some claim to lose a lot of active ingredient with slower cooking, others say you lose almost nothing.
Stir your cannabis butter regularly while it cooks and keep adding fresh water. Always when it has reduced to half the original amount. The butter is ready when the liquid separates, meaning when a fatty layer of oil floats on the surface. And until that happens, you naturally need a lot of patience. If you’re lucky, it only takes three to four hours; if not, you’ll be standing at the stove all day. But we promise: it’s worth it.
Now strain the liquid into a container so you can filter out the added cannabis. Take the cannabis with gloves and squeeze it out over a strainer. Naturally only if there’s a container underneath. This way you can get additional oil for your cannabis butter making, and believe us, a particularly large amount will still be squeezed out. So it would be wasteful if you just threw it away like that.
Don’t Throw Away Usable Leftovers!
By the way, it would be pretty foolish if you threw away the marijuana now. Because aside from making cannabis butter, you could also create delicious salad dressings, use it for a bread spread, or enrich other foods with it. Be a little creative and don’t carelessly throw everything away. There’s still plenty of CBD in the spent material and you can use it without problems.
But back to the butter…
Now place the container with the layer of butter oil and water in a refrigerator, because only this way can the oils solidify into butter. In winter, you can also put the oil on the balcony (caution: noticeable smell).
Now you need to be patient a little longer, because the cannabis butter should stand in the refrigerator for at least a day after preparation. After that, you can lift the butter from the container and you have finished cannabis butter.
The cannabis butter keeps for at least 2 weeks, but you could also freeze it and store it in the freezer. And depending on how much butter you made, that’s also worthwhile. This way you can always thaw it in portions and use it from the refrigerator.
More Tips on Cannabis Butter for Beginners
You can further develop the taste of cannabis butter and refine it with all sorts of things. Now your creativity is called for, because you could use various fruits, sugar, or herbs and spices. Many people use garlic, thyme, or basil, and Asian spices are also very popular. Consider beforehand whether you want more of a fruity cannabis butter, or whether you need it for other dishes or occasions. So you can add cocoa and coconut flakes or add chili powder and pepper. Everything tastes good.
And when you’ve finished your first cannabis butter, we’d love to hear your opinion and experience. Maybe you’ve individualized the recipe or discovered something completely new that makes the preparation easier.
