Typical leaflet numbers for a cannabis leaf are 5 or 7. With seven leaflets, one extends parallel to the petiole, four more spread outward in its direction, and the final two angle slightly in the opposite direction. Essentially, a circle is created at the node where the petiole transitions into the leaflets. The first leaflet is the largest, and each subsequent pair becomes smaller. Each leaflet has a central vein that provides stability. With many leaflets, a cannabis leaf may be more stable than if it were a single leaf. Additionally, each leaflet can individually orient itself toward the sun or grow light.
5 or 7 Leaflets on a Cannabis Leaf?
During germination, the plant’s first leaves have only one or three leaflets. Toward the end of flowering, the number decreases again. 5 to over 9 leaflets are normal. Whether 5 or more leaflets develop depends on the strain and growing conditions. In dry air, the number of leaflets on cannabis leaves tends to decrease. When conditions are poor, leaflet count also tends to drop, even if the strain has the genetic potential. Dry air, poor soil, incorrect nutrients, toxins, and other stressors cause the plant to suffer, resulting in cannabis leaves with fewer leaflets.

How Cannabis Leaves Develop Many Leaflets
For cannabis leaves to truly develop many leaflets, both genetic predisposition and excellent growing conditions must be present. Heat, light, humidity, nutrients, soil climate, and space are crucial factors. Plants that tend toward seven leaflets can develop 9 or more under optimal conditions. Leaves on the same plant will have varying numbers of leaflets. The position of the cannabis leaf on the plant also affects how it can develop. It’s also important that cannabis plants receive appropriate lighting duration, as toward the end of flowering, newly formed leaves revert to 3 or single leaflets.

A cannabis leaf with many leaflets is more aesthetically pleasing. However, as long as there are at least 5 leaflets, it typically makes little difference to the plant’s potency or yield.
