Since April 1, 2024, every adult citizen in Germany is permitted to cultivate up to three cannabis plants within certain legal frameworks to meet their personal needs. Naturally, many consumers and hobby gardeners welcome this opportunity, but there are also plenty of people for whom home cannabis cultivation isn’t possible for various reasons.

For them, the legislature has created the option to join a cultivation club and use another legal acquisition route. These cultivation associations are often referred to, following the Spanish model, as Cannabis Social Club (CSC), even though the term isn’t entirely accurate since the legal regulations don’t really permit the social component – namely communal consumption. Nevertheless, we’re happy to use the term CSC because we certainly hope for this aspect to become reality for our clubs in Germany in the long term.

How Does a CSC Actually Work?

In simple terms, the Cannabis Social Club grows cannabis and distributes it to its members for their personal use. You might initially imagine this as a few friends pooling money and jointly purchasing everything needed for cultivation, then getting started. In some respects, that’s not entirely wrong, but it’s certainly more complex than that. Operating a CSC that wants to provide its members with legally compliant and reliable high-quality cannabis in Germany requires considerable organization and structure. Much needs to be planned, reviewed, and documented to guarantee excellent quality and proper operations. Memberships, finances, cultivation, and distribution – everything must be managed. Nobody does that today with pen and paper; there are innovative software solutions like Cannanas, the software for your CSC.

GanjaFarmerGanjaFarmer

More than half of the currently licensed CSCs in Germany rely on Cannanas. The range of functions offered is enormous – complete member management with customization options for membership cards, everything from seed to distribution can be monitored and documented, and Cannanas offers a social media feed that strengthens the social component of the association. To delve deeper into the topic, we wanted to quiz the Cannanas team with our questions.

Cannanas in Test: Interview with the Founders

Interview with Peter, Ben, and Nikolaij from Cannanas

Hanf Magazin: Tell me a bit about the story behind Cannanas! Who had the idea that clubs would need software like yours?

Peter: The first idea for Cannanas came to us in April 2023 – at a time when legalization in Germany was still more of a political sketch than reality. Karl Lauterbach first spoke about the government – SPD, Greens, and FDP – planning a model that would make cannabis accessible for recreational use through so-called Cannabis Social Clubs. We immediately realized: if this really happens, these clubs will be the backbone of a new culture. And if thousands of people want to grow, manage, and distribute together, they need digital infrastructure that makes it legally compliant, transparent, and efficient. Not a patchwork – but a real, solid system. As tech enthusiasts with a connection to cannabis, we early recognized what could emerge here – not just a new industry, but a new social reality. And we wanted to develop the best software for it. That’s how Cannanas was born: from the conviction that clubs shouldn’t just exist somehow – they should function really well. Digitalization is often talked about – we wanted to show how it’s done right.

Ben: We were enthusiastic from the start about the vision of a modern, legal cannabis culture in Germany. At the same time, we asked ourselves: What would this concretely look like for it to really work? How would I, as a member, want to experience my club? And how can a board manage its club efficiently and responsibly – especially with hundreds of members and a significant financial framework? It quickly became clear: the legal, organizational, and cultural requirements are so specific that a tailor-made solution is needed. Of course, many things can theoretically be solved with an Excel spreadsheet – but only up to a certain point. From the beginning, we wanted to build software that doesn’t just keep up but gives clubs a real advantage. Cannanas is our contribution to a new era – a scalable, thoughtfully designed platform for professional club management.

Hanf Magazin: Cannanas is really an all-in-one solution for CSCs – everything from seed to distribution can be planned, managed, monitored, and documented. Was this immense range of functions fixed from the start, or did the first approaches focus more on individual aspects of CSC management?

Ben: From the beginning, we focused on developing exactly the features that were needed at the right time. Cannanas couldn’t emerge overnight – and we didn’t want it to anyway. Our goal was always to stay ahead of the clubs and already have answers to questions before they even arise. Of course, we had a clear vision of how the app should work and how distribution to members should happen. But looking back, Cannanas has become far more comprehensive and beautiful than we could have ever imagined. That’s largely due to our close collaboration with the clubs and because we could learn directly from practice. Cannanas now includes countless small functions, buttons, and switches that we couldn’t have imagined at the start. We’re especially proud of these small details that support clubs in tricky situations and make everyday work easier.

Peter: Initially, our focus was clear: member management, digital IDs, and a traceable distribution system. But the deeper we dove into the topic and the more we talked with dedicated club founders, the more it became clear that there are many small and large challenges – from cultivation protocols to finances to hygiene and documentation requirements. So the scope of features grew – not on the drawing board, but directly from dialogue with the clubs. We continuously expand Cannanas without losing sight of user-friendliness.

Nikolaij: To take on a project like this, you have to be a special kind of character. Fortunately, that applies to everyone on our team. At the beginning, we didn’t realize the scope of it, but we just kept going, talked to clubs, and learned new things. Much was unclear – even whether the law would be implemented at all. But we were able to prepare a lot and, thanks to genuine passion behind the project, were very efficient. Many probably would have quit along the way, but it was simply a wonderful feeling to move forward alongside the clubs and do pioneering work. That motivated us. Additionally, our team is bound together internally by strong cohesion and especially the same quality standards. We want to show how digitalization can work in Germany and deliver the best software the clubs can get – with all our skills and resources. That’s what made Cannanas the all-in-one solution that nearly 150 cultivation associations now use daily.

Hanf Magazin: Despite the many features, you leave room for development. For example, you offer an email address on your homepage where users can send improvement suggestions, ideas, and requests for new features. Do you get a lot of useful input that way, or do suggestions come in rarely?

Ben: Cannanas thrives on staying in close contact with the clubs and especially with members. We receive countless messages – and without this valuable input, we wouldn’t be where we are today. We’re grateful for every piece of feedback from the community and try to implement suggestions often the same day. Larger requests naturally take a bit longer sometimes, but it’s important to us to respond quickly and practically. What’s also particularly nice are messages where people thank us because they’ve finally left the black market or are happy about how simple the processes are. This feedback motivates us tremendously and shows us daily that we’re on the right track together.

Peter: We receive messages from club founders daily and maintain personal contact with thousands of people – this closeness to the clubs is very important to us and is essential for a good product. Some of our best features have emerged directly from this dialogue. Our goal is to stay close to the clubs, and we see the community as co-creators. We take feedback seriously and try to respond quickly. The idea is: if a club needs something, many clubs probably need it too. So we implement it – lean, thoughtful, and in a way that actually works in practice.

Nikolaij: We don’t see ourselves as external service providers but as the clubs‘ daily sparring partners – and we have been for over two years. Every request or wish is examined, discussed, and documented in detail. Regular feedback calls and personal exchange are one of the cornerstones on which Cannanas is built. CSCs work with real professionals who know exactly what they need. Together, we continuously work to improve the experience and minimize effort.

Hanf Magazin: Through the Cannanas app, consumers can choose a cultivation club and then apply for membership. Since license distribution is still progressing slowly in some regions, there are still many areas without clubs, particularly in rural areas. How do you see developments? Will there soon be comprehensive availability of cultivation associations?

Peter: Absolutely. The demand is huge, and motivation in the industry is high. Sure, many authorities are still struggling, the legal framework is complex, and not every municipality immediately understands how much prevention and quality assurance a well-run CSC involves. But over time, understanding will grow – even in rural areas. We’re already seeing it: clubs are being founded, sometimes in very small towns. It may take a bit of patience, but the network will become denser. And our software helps even small clubs appear professional and grows with their needs.

Ben: Every club started small once – and it should be fun above all! Today, we share the experiences we’ve gathered collaborating with hundreds of clubs. The best practices of large, successful clubs have flowed directly into Cannanas. That’s why we support new clubs with detailed documentation and proven processes so they can focus entirely on their community and enjoy the experience. Our goal is to create a safe and pleasant alternative to the black market and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Nikolaij: We see Cannabis Social Clubs as the future of legal and safe consumption. People need a professional point of contact to get information and, especially, to obtain a product of the highest quality. A serious solution, real prevention, and member welfare must come first. When you see what’s being achieved here despite such strong restrictions, we can hardly imagine another option.

CSC & Politics: Future of Cannabis Social Clubs

Hanf Magazin: The question of whether our new federal government will impose restrictions on cannabis use naturally plays a significant role for CSCs and for Cannanas. Are you worried that a Union-led government could make things difficult for clubs through stricter regulations?

Peter: We’re watching political developments very closely, and we’re convinced: the clubs are now much more than just a legislative product. They stand for a conscious, self-determined, and safe approach to cannabis. If politics opts for a more restrictive course, that won’t prevent demand – it will more likely send demand back into uncontrolled channels. And nobody really wants that. We hope that even a Union-led government will recognize: a transparent CSC is far better than a black market. What we see is a huge number of motivated people producing cannabis in the highest quality with all their hearts and tireless effort. Not mass products, but a product born from passion. Much like Cannanas. Just with software instead.

Ben: Having now worked with countless clubs, conducted many conversations with various authorities, and exchanged ideas with people conducting evaluations, we’re convinced that cannabis decriminalization is the right path for Germany. We believe that different members of the Bundestag also regard this path as sensible and good, regardless of their party affiliation. CSCs are doing excellent work, and we firmly believe this model is a logical and sensible solution for Germany. Should legal changes occur, we’ll simply build them into Cannanas.

Nikolaij: Especially when you look at current developments, feedback, and statements from authorities, we see incredible potential here, even if there’s still some politically motivated resistance. But in the long term, that’s not a solution, and you can see in other federal states how excellently everything can function. We maintain good contact with many authorities and see ourselves as a supportive digital organ to enable optimal collaboration. So this digitalization that’s always being talked about. We’ve also exchanged ideas with the research team conducting the KCanG evaluation to optimally prepare clubs and Germany for the evaluation. All of this will show the facts and leave increasingly less room for criticism. Regarding any legal adjustments, we remain relaxed for now, since there’s far too much at stake for politics. Also, potential lawsuits from hundreds of clubs and the criminalization of a huge portion of the population would be quite a self-inflicted wound. We recommend that politics address real problems, start there, and don’t hinder an industry that carries enormous potential. Countless young companies like Cannanas have flourished thanks to this long-overdue law, people are gaining safe access to a quality product, and they’re being well-informed. What’s not to like?

Hanf Magazin: Now that we’ve done a bit of doom-saying about potential restrictions, let’s do the opposite and use our positive imagination. There are many things the CanG leaves to be desired in its current form, also regarding the possibilities for CSCs. Which improvement would be most important to you, and which is likely to become reality?

Nikolaij: If you asked us, a possible delivery service and an exemption from participation requirements would be the most sensible points to scale the clubs‘ potential. Sure, milder distance regulations and easier property access also play a role, but we have little hope there. Clubs are filling up steadily anyway, and demand is incredibly high. However, value should also be placed on inclusion, and clubs are already exploring all options available to them. Not everyone should participate in professional cultivation. First, because quality requires it, and also because some people simply aren’t able to participate due to time or physical constraints. With delivery, thanks to state-of-the-art digital processes, all steps could be documented, and ID verification at the door could also take place.

Peter: Also high on our wish list is the option for communal consumption in the club – a protected space where education, exchange, and community can happen. That would be real progress – socially, healthwise, and culturally. A broader range of offerings with, for example, edibles would also be desirable. Accessibility to CSC products could also be much better. Specifically, that means deliveries for people with mobility restrictions (maybe even by drone) or a real club operation with gastronomy and entertainment. Dreaming is allowed!

Ben: What’s currently occupying many clubs and members is the very restrictive interpretation of advertising bans and consumption bans in clubs. We view this critically – because many clubs not only produce excellent products but also provide strong community and create places where people can meet and exchange. In our view, advertising and consumption bans in clubs in their current form are not contemporary. Of course, we don’t just want to criticize fundamentally and understand potential motivations, but we believe that with some courage and pragmatism, better, more modern regulations would be possible. Why shouldn’t a club doing great work be allowed to communicate openly? And why shouldn’t communal consumption be allowed? We see clubs increasingly in public – and there’s no reason for secrecy around cannabis anymore.

Hanf Magazin: As a leading software provider in this area, you’ve already gathered some experience with CSCs. What do you think are the most important criteria, besides the obvious price-to-performance ratio, that consumers use to decide which club they want to join?

Peter: Transparency is a huge topic. People want to know what happens with their membership fee, how cultivation works, and what quality they can expect. Then comes communication – how openly, friendly, and competently does the club present itself? And not least: what values does it represent? We notice that many clubs develop their own profile – ecological, communal, innovative. So members don’t just decide for good cannabis, but also for an environment where they feel comfortable. Cannanas substantially supports making this visible and tangible – through first-class and modern user experience.

Nikolaij: Optimized and especially well-thought-out processes should be the foundation for every CSC. A professional team with the appropriate know-how and passion for the project. CSCs aren’t dusty associations but a community – and I’m into that when I notice that alongside a first-class product, I also get a great experience on top. Cool people, great communication, and own style. We constantly hear about great ideas emerging in clubs – whether it’s setting up the distribution point or internal design in Cannanas. Members celebrate their club, and the nicer you make it for them, the better for everyone.

Hanf Magazin: Let’s assume a cultivation club reaches the maximum of 500 members. How many varieties would the selection need to contain so cultivation, management, etc. remain manageable?

Peter: Of course, that depends on the club’s ambitions. But with 6–10 strains, you can offer a balanced selection without the workload exploding. Some clubs specialize in few lines – e.g., more Cali strains or classic „local varieties.“ Others want as much diversity as possible. Cannanas supports both cases: our tools enable seamless planning, batch tracking, and documentation – from seedling to distribution. And because processes are clearly structured, complex setups can be managed well with few people. The clear advantage of good software is: all processes and data flow centrally, are interconnected, and thus allow you to maintain oversight efficiently even in stressful moments.

Ben: Regarding strain selection at clubs, we’re currently seeing great variety – everything is still new, and many clubs are discovering together with their members what works well. Cannanas supports clubs in experimenting and improving. Some also build only a small selection of favorite strains right away – and that works perfectly. Others want as much diversity as possible and try numerous genetics before certain favorites emerge among members. Many end up at 5–10 strains later. Some clubs are already breeding their own genetics in many different batches – and that’s exactly what we developed Cannanas for: compare and develop strains, evaluate growing progressions, and incorporate member feedback – regardless of how large the club becomes. Cannanas combines member management, cultivation planning and documentation, seamless batch tracking, distribution and warehouse management, task organization, equipment inventory, differentiated user roles, payment, financial management with DATEV export, comprehensive documentation functionality – providing a flexible, intuitive all-in-one solution that sustainably supports cultivation associations.

With an all-in-one software solution, Cannanas serves all needs in the CSC area. The prospective member finds a club, the club member finds their club and other members, and the CSC itself finds everything it needs to ensure smooth operations – from seed to members‘ hands and beyond. For more information, visit cannanas.club or download the Cannanas app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
