In North Macedonia, the country’s largest anti-drug operation in history is currently underway. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expects that up to 100 tons of cannabis could be seized by the end of the ongoing raids. The premier has leveled serious accusations against his predecessor government, speaking of a misguided „cartel policy.“

On Sunday evening, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski held a press conference to take stock of the massive wave of searches that shook the country over the weekend. More than 40 tons of cannabis as well as large quantities of cannabis oil and biomass have already been confiscated.
Raids on Licensed Facilities
The curious thing about the operation: the drugs were not found in secret warehouses, but at companies that actually hold official licenses for the cultivation of medical cannabis. Mickoski announced a far-reaching decision for the upcoming cabinet meeting on Tuesday: „We will enter every single company that produces hemp for medical purposes.“
According to Mickoski, the current situation is the result of the previous government’s policy from SDSM and DUI. He accused them of corrupting the sector through „cartel structures.“ The affected companies are alleged to have massively violated legal requirements—an accusation that must now be clarified in court.
Diplomatic Tensions Over Serbia Seizure
Additional controversy was sparked by the question of five tons of cannabis recently seized in Serbia’s Konjuh (near Kruševac). According to reports, this shipment allegedly originated from North Macedonia. Mickoski, however, expressed skepticism and slight irritation:
„I don’t know where you got the information that five tons left the country. Why do you trust the government of a neighboring country more than your own?“

However, North Macedonia’s Interior Ministry is working closely with the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Corruption to investigate this exact connection.
Seizure Numbers
Police have already provided detailed insights into the findings at licensed cultivation facilities:
- Skopje: At one facility, approximately 9 tons of hemp flowers and over 1,300 bottles of cannabis oil (semi-finished product) were confiscated.
- Eastern Region: Multiple companies in the eastern region of the country had over 31 tons of biomass and hemp seized.
